Natural and Secret Questions
-
In the winter of 2018 in residency at the Vermont Studio Center, I began photographing the sun reflecting off melting snow. A Californian who had recently relocated east, the harsher winter was both fascinating and cruel, shocking my unaccustomed sprit into a new vulnerability. I saw the snow as ever-changing, always shifting states from powder to ice to water and back again.
In Natural and Secret Questions, I explore personal mutability and the broader capacity for transformation. As the light from the sun bounces off the ice and water into my lens, it splits into a spectrum of colors, creating otherworldly images. The light so beautifully reflecting off the water as it changes from solid to liquid is the very thing that is causing the material to change. This work explores the transformation between the two states of water as an analog for personal transformation.
